Gathering

The Leaves in my yard are still there from last year,

They’ve never been raked, and so they’re still here

You know raking is work, now, and it takes some time,

Takes patient endurance, like making a rhyme

It struck me that neighbors are much like these leaves,

Just putting around, like dirt with no seeds

They’re close but not touching, like our family,

And often seem distant, each one with their need

With no one that’s close to them to rely on,

By sharing God’s love, new life we can spawn

Fresh hope from the Savior, like cheese over bread,

His peace fills our heart, as we each bow our head

Our neighbors are people, just like you and me,

God loves and He cares, and He wants them to see

The change in our lives that His presence has wrought,

Our freedom from guilt that forgiveness has bought

If we cannot show them, and we cannot tell,

I wonder if we really know God that well

If our only claim (the difference in us) is a habit or two,

A deed we have done or just our attitude

We’re fooling ourselves that we follow the Lord,

That we have been changed or that we love His word

For unless He is living inside of our shell,

Giving us power to love others well

Fueling our faith in God’s only Son,

Believing we’re saved based on what Christ has done

Drawing us rightly to feed on His word,

To worship each week through the preaching we’ve heard

To pray for His blessing on all those around,

To cleanse us and heal us, lest sin should abound

To ask that His will might be first in our heart,

Our tithes and our offerings, we each bring our part

The gospel will reach through our hearts to the lost,

Through our love and service, we’ll each count the cost

The Elect and the Chosen approach God in fear,

Repenting, forgiven, they’re now drawing near

Called to His kingdom, their task is at hand,

Proclaiming the Savior, on His blood they stand

Beloved of the Father, and chosen for grace,

His mercy is new as He looks on each face

The Webb Effect

For FBC Richmond youth group reunion

The bus was green, the note was blue, the driver is good, his heart is true

The man was called, he brought his wife, they served the church with their whole life

The youth retreats, with orders sealed, helped us grow, our hearts were healed

The Bible taught, they showed their love, thus we learned of God above

Others joined them in the fray, to teach the youth how they should pray

These brave adults who taught us truth, they cared for every single youth

And in their footsteps, we then walked, and often listened as they talked

Of how our lives could closer be, walk with God in intimacy

Now the days have turned to years, we’ve had some smiles, and yes, some tears

But God is still here, by our side, His grace is deep, His love is wide

We have become the leaders who, these leaders saw in me and you

Our turn to teach the younger crowd, to reach their hearts with music loud

The gift that God has given true, by those who’ve gone ahead of you

The gift of faith that you can share, with other people, everywhere

Are you engaged? Does your faith work? You’re not like those who often shirk

Our time is short, our mission grave, to win the fight we must be brave

To care for folks and reach the lost, we sacrifice and count the cost

For God has given much to us, and we give back without a fuss

Our love to give, our gift to show, with humble hearts, we bow down low

We serve the risen, mighty King, He is the Lord of everything

Your life He always will direct, so walk before Him circumspect

One day soon, we’re going home, to revel in His kingdom come

Gifts for the King

Our sacrifice to God we bring, some to serve, and some to sing

Some to speak His holy word, some to do just what we’ve heard

Some to give our very best, serving others, their lives bless

Some to lead and some to teach, all for Christ the lost to reach

He’s made us all with gifts unique, to build the body, His face to seek

Disciples teaching as we go, love for God, the more to show

Examples of the God we love, destined for heaven, up above

There to serve before His throne, our ever glorious Cornerstone
